Nutrition-774 Initiative (N-774): A Pathway for Achieving SDG 2 — A Holistic Strategy for Nutrition, Agriculture, and Sustainable Development: Abia State on the Spotlight

In an era where hunger remains one of the biggest challenges facing developing nations, Abia State is quietly making powerful strides towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 – Zero Hunger. While the conversation around malnutrition and food insecurity in Nigeria has often been one of concern and helplessness, Abia is shifting the narrative with clear vision, purposeful action, and strong leadership.

At the centre of this transformation is the recent launch of the Nutrition-774 (N-774) Initiative, a Federal Government-backed programme designed to tackle malnutrition across all 774 local government areas in Nigeria. Abia State was proudly selected as the pilot state to kick off the initiative—a recognition of its readiness and commitment to combating food insecurity and improving public health.

But the story of Abia’s progress didn’t begin with the N-774 launch. For over a year, the state under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti has been investing heavily in sectors that directly influence nutrition and household wellbeing. Health and education now account for more than 35% of the state’s annual budget, showing a clear understanding that ending hunger isn’t just about food—it’s about empowering people, supporting families, and nurturing children.

Abia’s efforts are grounded in a holistic approach. Instead of seeing hunger as an isolated issue, the government has connected its anti-hunger strategy with broader reforms in agriculture, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development. For instance, by ensuring that civil servants are paid promptly and rural farmers receive the support they need, the state is empowering breadwinners to provide food, stability, and dignity for their households.

Another standout area of focus is agriculture. Abia is investing in the revival of farming through better land use, farmer training, input support, and security. The goal is to make agriculture not just a survival tool but a viable career path—especially for young people. With vast arable land and a climate suitable for year-round farming, Abia is positioning itself to become a hub for nutritious, locally grown food.

The launch of the N-774 Initiative in Abia was more than a ceremony—it was a turning point. The initiative aims to integrate nutrition into every aspect of governance: from education and public health to food production and community empowerment. The state has since begun working with traditional rulers, local government chairmen, community-based organisations, and civil society groups to take the message of nutrition to every ward, every school, and every home.

What’s remarkable is how the people are responding. There is a growing sense of ownership of the Zero Hunger vision. Schools are starting garden projects, communities are hosting nutrition talks, and local farmers are seeing new markets emerge for their produce. This isn’t just government policy—it’s a people-driven movement.

While the challenge of hunger remains serious in many parts of Nigeria, Abia’s approach offers a model of what is possible. The state understands that ending hunger is not about handouts, but about creating a sustainable ecosystem where everyone—from children in classrooms to farmers in the fields—has what they need to thrive.

The journey is ongoing, but the message is clear: Zero Hunger is achievable—and Abia is leading the way.

If other states can take a cue from this level of integrated planning, committed leadership, and grassroots involvement, Nigeria will be much closer to achieving food security for all.
